Fun from across the internet

This week I’ve been wracking my mind trying to figure out what to write for this months’ newsletter. Instead of trying to come up with something witty or inspirational I decided I’d share some fun music and sound videos.

Let’s kick things off with a nerdy video about the physics behind the noise of Cicadas by Ben Jordan:

Here’s a video from Jon Meyer where he modifies a cheap Gretsch Jim Dandy acoustic guitar (which is actually really good for the price) with a rubber bridge. The resulting low-fi sound he gets from this $250 guitar is amazing.

From the musical masters Andrew Huang and Rob Scallon comes the Sonic Boom web series. They’ve been doing a set of collaborations where they challenge themselves to write music with weird restrictions. In these two videos they’ve challenged themselves to make a song with their Right Hand Only (in Rob’s video) and then their Left Hand Only (Andrew’s Video).

My next link is to a music producer/teacher named Rick Beato. I’m just going to link to his channel because he’s got so much amazing content. His videos range from interviews with industry greats, to reviewing the latest music trends, to going over the fundamentals of music theory. Check his videos out here:

For bass junkies, Phillip Conrad explores whether playing quieter makes your tone fatter:

Lastly, a few weeks ago I stumbled upon this amazing group called Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. Their schtick is taking today’s hit songs and redoing them in a style from the past. Some examples are: One Week by Barenaked Ladies as a 1940’s jazz song or the Bee Gees Stayin’ Alive as ragtime rockabilly. Here’s their version of The Power of Love by Huey Lewis as a New Orleans Blues song:

I hope you enjoy.

Until next time,

Nick
